  Darjeeling Tourism
The name Darjeeling is a composition of 'dorje' meaning 'thunderbolt' and 'ling' meaning 'place' 'the Land of Thunderbolt'. It is perched at 2134 m directly opposite the massif of Kanchenjunga. At 8586 metres, this is the world's third highest mountain and India's highest and is surrounded by tea plantations on all sides. Darjeeling has been a popular hill station since the British regime.

Enchanting Darjeeling:
Darjeeling in the eastern state of West Bengal offers the cool height of the Himalayas. The spectacular sunrise and sunsets are unforgettable sights at Darjeeling. It offers a breath-taking sight of the numerous peaks of the majestic Himalayas. The view of Kanchenjunga and Mount Everest are particularly awe inspiring. Darjeeling, centre of India's most celebrated tea-growing district, has possibly the best views of any Indian hill station.The finest blend of tea comes from various tea gardens of this region. The Buddhist Monasteries and the Hindu temples found here are of architectural and cultural importance.

Ghoom Buddhist Monastery
Ghoom Buddhist Monastery :
is the most famous monastery in Darjeeling and is about eight km from town. It enshrines an image of Maitreya Buddha (the coming Buddha).
Tiger Hill
Tiger Hill
is the highest spot in the area at a height of 2590 metres, about 11 km from Darjeeling. The hill is famous for its magnificent dawn view over the Kanchenjunga peak.

» Lloyds Botanical Garden is a colourful garden situated just below the market motor stand. It contains a representative collection of Himalayan plants, flowers, orchids, etc.

» Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park is a high altitude wild life park and a new home for the Siberian Tiger, Himalayan Black Deer, Deer Panda, Llama and birds.

» Bhutia Busty Monastery. Dhirdham Temple, Natural History Museum, Ropeway, Botanical gardens and The Zoological Park are some other attractions.

Climate:
The best time to visit Darjeeling is from March-May or September-November. The rains which start by May end are heavy downpours making living conditions cold and dreary. In winter there is a drastic fall in temperature from the summer's 15 to 25 degrees centigrade to 2 to 10 degrees.

Shopping Halt:
The `star' buy in Darjeeling but naturally is tea. Other good buys include Tibetan handicrafts,scraves and other artefacts. Gorkha knives, woollen knitwear and locally made carpets,leather work and wood work are also available. Some good places for shopping are Hayden Hall, Manjusha (West Bengal Emporium), Gram Shilpa and Tibetan Refugees Self-Help Center.

Travel connectivity:
» Airway: The nearest airport is at Bagdogra, 90 km away from Darjeeling. Bagdogra is connected to important cities of the country by domestic airlines.

» Railway: New Jalpaiguri /Siliguri is the rail head for all trains, except the toy train running to Darjeeling. Siliguri is connected to Calcutta and other parts of the country by train

» Roadway: There are bus connections to Darjeeling from Siliguri, Bagdogra, Gangtok, Kurseong and Kathmandu.
